Hi everyone. Justin and I have initiated a new blog to accompany our relocation to Pittsburgh. I've just posted pictures of our apartment, if you want to see what it's like.
http://steel-away.blogspot.comWe've had three days of deathly heat and I'm spending most of my time at the library, logged in under Justin's name, cruising the world wide web. Our neighborhood is simultaneously nice and kind of creepy. When we were still unloading the U-haul a girl in a 50's polka dot dress walked by carrying some sort of home baked good on a tray. She bid me welcome but I was too cranky to try to make friends; she walked on by. Then last night a guy stopped and looked at me and when I timidly said, "Hi?" he responded, "Oh, sorry, I thought you were Jane." "Oh...nope..." and I scurried off, instead of using his mistake to force him into becoming my first acquaintance!
A couple more things about the neighborhood: just up our street there is a convenience store where you can buy beer (this is valuable because all liquor is sold in state stores and you can only get beer at certain places and often must buy six packs at bars). However, in the back of this store, by the coolers, is a plastic bar set up with a TV in the corner and ashtrays and a crusty crazy old woman running the cash register. You can get drunk in the back of this gas station, surrounded by fridges full of beer and shelves full of snacks. Lastly, there's a diner nearby that, I must say, trumps the Fleetwood. Not only do they have gyros, cheap burgers, fries, tuna melts, and stinky locals....they also have banana splits, buttermilk (?!), braunschweiger sandwiches, and bar stools that actually have backs to them. They don't have hippie hash, I admit. But the serving ladies are all over 60 and wear nurse's smocks as their uniforms AND it's right next to a Taco Bell. What did I tell you? Utopia.
