Collision of Minds

As part of my campaign to destroy literature and philosophy (if only in my mind), I am listening to a Timothy Leary self-made tape while reading the sermons of Martin Luther. The Leary tape was recorded in 1969, with Leary toting around a tape recorder in a room full of friends and supporters on acid, all discussing his upcoming California gubernatorial campaign against Ronald Reagan (Leary calls him "Reegan") soon to be dashed by Leary's arrest on drug possession (two joints = ten years). Leary escaped from jail and fled American justice for two years before finally being apprehended in Afghanistan and was delightfully dubbed "the most dangerous man in the world" by President Richard Nixon. (Two Joints!). The Luther sermons were written in the 1530's and were mainly delivered at Luther's home to interested persons as Luther could not go out much without risking his life. The Catholics were kind of sore at him for revealing that the pope was the antichrist. Who knew?

Party on 3

I will be in town on the 30th. For some weird reason, my parents won't be around until the 4th. We should have a party in their house in Dearborn, either on the weekend or on Monday since no one has to work on the 4th. We'll only be a 15minute drive from downtown Detroit, or we can hang out in Dearborn. We have a bocce ball set and a nice garden which some of you can vouch for. Chris will invite his girlfriend and friends and I'll invite some of my other friends. We have a grill. Who'd like to come to my parents' house on Saturday or Monday evening? I would like to know as I haven't seen any of you for half a year and it may be another half a year or more depending on the move. Also, Vail smells and has petrified eggs in its walls. I've had a couple just now.

#1: Ugh, this is disgusting. Where did you come up with this?

#2: Oh, its russian.

#1: Really? You know I speak a bit of russian.

#3: Yeah, I lived in Russia for a while.

#1: Oh? Where?

#3: In Minsk.

#1: But isn't that in Belarus?

#3: I don't know, I've never been to russia.

What are you people doing this weekend? Is it too late to plan a west-side-of-the-state retreat? In St. Joe, there's fireworks on the beach and you can watch from in the lake. They're Monday night. Maybe we could arrange something?

There's always later in the month, for Venetian Festival, which also has fireworks on the beach. However, Styx and The Bangles will be headlining the musical festivities that weekend.

Partly-Cloudy Horizon

Honestly, the sooner you get here the better. New York, if you don’t
currently live here, is kind of a different place and it takes some
time to figure it all out. Plus you’ll want to get in all of that
sightseeing stuff, see some plays, visit some statues and buildings
and museums and stuff. You know, write it off as location scouting.

That way when orientation comes around you’re not worrying about
moving in, getting a bank account, making friends with the mice in
your kitchen, buying groceries, letting your significant other know
that you really care about them but things are ‘just so new and
different here’ and let’s face it, film is your one true love
anyway. I’m kidding, I’m sure it will totally work out.

The first thing you should really do is to join the Columbia Film
myspace group (yeah, that’s just the way we like to roll). If
you’re one of the 10 people in the world who isn’t on the myspace
then go to www.myspace.com, sign up for that whole thing, choose a
tasteful photo, write something clever and charming about yourself
and then click over to groups, search for Columbia Film, click join
group and that’s it. From here on out I’ll post all bulletins and
info on the myspace group so look there first for answers to any
questions you might have.

When you get the time, drop me an email so I know that this email
address is correct. Also, let me know if you’ll be in the New York
area anytime over the summer, maybe we’ll arrange a bar night
somewhere in the village for the people hanging out during the
summer. In addition, the second years are shooting their short
films all summer; if you’re interested in working on some films and
seeing who these so called ‘second years’ are, let me know and I’ll
make it happen.

In the meantime, relax. Enjoy your summer. Read that Tolstoy novel
you’ve been meaning to get to. Enjoy that sporting activity you
like so much. Go see one of the many interesting blockbuster movies
like… well, anyway. There’s always netflix.

Fields of Industry + Clear Days Always

We'll be playing at the Thunderbird Coffeehouse in Jackson on Friday, 6/16. Also playing is Clear Days Always of Friction Records in Grand Rapids. If you're into violence and self-loathing channeled through a single acoustic guitar, then you'll like CDA.

Also playing will be a guy from Virginia that I don't know anything about.

The Thunderbird is located at 129 E. Michigan Ave. in Jackson. The show will start around 7:30 and end by 10:00 for those planning to drive to Detroit later that night.

Buildings reborn

This is a before and after picture of a theater in Pittsburgh's "cultural district." The city hired this guy to paint the mural as part of what they call "Renaissance III" or, "Let's make Pittsburgh prettier and more artsy." This is a digression, however. What I wanted to say was check out the artist's website and look at some of his murals. The ones with before and after pictures are especially shocking and wonderful to imagine. www.richardhaas.com/zmuralfr.html

Net Neutrality

Read the news on net neutrality before taking action.

The House rejected it. The Senate has yet to deliberate on the issue.

"Jihad Generation" -MTV

"These are kids at a transition, between Islamic society and Western society," he adds. "A lot of people will get militarized if they're unsure of their own identity." Plus, Thompson says, "They're just young and stupid. If you're 17, bored, restless, you want to meet girls - hey, be a radical."

I am in Texico.

Thank you to all who came to my going away party on Friday. Sorry if any of my ridiculously drunk Cosi friends tried picking a fight with you, humped you, or hit your bike while pulling drunkenly into the driveway. Sorry that I was so terrible at saying goodbye to all of you; I was overstimulated and easily distracted. Nonetheless, I had a pretty good time, hope you did as well.

Fields of Industry + Bear Mountain Picnic

Awesome like a Bear in a Field:

Fields and BMP will be at the Ugly Mug in Ypsilanti this Saturday, June 10th at approximately 7 pm. Come with friends and rock out.

Joshua.
