Volunteers needed

I'm moving back to Ann Arbor for the rest of the summer, and have plans in place for getting me from our nation's capital to the Detroit airport. I realize, however, that from that point on the details get much hazier. Would any of you fine folks with a car be at all interested in driving out to Romulus on Wednesday evening to pick me up? You would get in return my eternal thanks and affection.


Also, in case anybody's interested, here's what I'll be doing during my summer in Ann Arbor:
June: Living it Vail (somebody had to do it)
July-end of summer: Living with Adam at Linder, which will be the headquarters of the Jarosonian Institute. From our little co-op room, we will sow the seeds of change and engineer the conversion of the entire city to the Jarosonian way of life. I've reformed the nation as much as I could during my stay in DC, but have realized that the only way to truly make a difference is through grass roots movements like the Institute. With Buttso as our leader, the sky's the limit.

A reasonable way out of Iraq?

I hate to bring political stuff to the non-partisan swim club blog, but this is a new and very reasonable approach to getting us out of Iraq. I went to the unveiling of the plan today, and it seems to me that this is at the very least a good starting point for substantive discussions on how to get out before we get caught in the middle of something even more horrific. Too bad the Pentagon probably won't even consider anything in this report. Basically, we would set a deadline for the end of 2007, start decreasing troop levels gradually, focus on reconstruction and training Iraqi forces and providing them with logistical support, and set up a conflict resolution conference with the cooperation of the UN, while in general focusing on diplomacy, not nation-building. One important point that was made is that by maintaining an open-ended commitment to keep our troops there indefinitely, the Iraqi government has less incentive to stabilize the country than they would if they knew that most US forces would be gone in a year and a half. Something to think about, at least.

Fields of Industry at First Friday Potluck

We've made it another month. Some of us are graduating. It's cinco de Mayo. It's time to celebrate...

Come to the first friday potluck THIS friday at Hayford House in Lansing at 7pm.

Bring some vegeterian food and/or a drink to pass around. We'll have a special guest this time:

And if that's not enough, at 10pm, we are organizing a bike brigade to a "Cinco de Vino" party at our local viticulturist-friends.
