_____________________________________________________________________
There's something nice below about Duke to take away attention from the rape/sodomy/kidnapping/hate crime/theft that's consuming everyone's attention, say at this website, right here: (http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2006/03/clips033006.html).

Recent Duke University graduate Aaron Dinin has produced an entertaining, imaginative look at Krzyzewskiville, the tent city named after Duke University’s head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (Sha-shef-ski). A unique Duke tradition, Krzyzewskiville is used to determine which students are admitted into key games. Taking Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales as his model, Dinin has created characters who narrate their semi-fictionalized tales—by turns reverent, bawdy, and humorous—to enlighten readers about this cherished institution. So the story begins. On a wintry night in Durham, North Carolina, writes Dinin, twelve students huddle under the meager protection of a nylon tent. They have little in common except the sacrosanct tradition that has brought them together for the past month. Before the sun next sets, they will anoint themselves in blue and white paint and enter nearby Cameron Indoor Stadium to worship at the altar of Blue Devil basketball. In the meantime, they abide in Krzyzewskiville. A stranger enters the tent, a respected sportswriter, and suggests that the tenters pass the hours until the next tent check by telling stories of Krzyzewskiville. Like Chaucer’s pilgrims, the students compete to tell the best tale. They report on ribald extracurricular tenting activities, relate a dream in which Duke basketball players and coaches test a fan’s loyalty, debate the rationality of tenting as a way of allocating students’ tickets, and describe the spontaneous tent city that sprang up one summer when their beloved “Coach K” was offered a job elsewhere. This storytelling competition creates a loving portrait of the complex rules and tribal customs that make up the rich community and loyal fans that are Krzyzewskiville. Mickie Krzyzewski, Coach K’s wife and a familiar courtside figure at Duke basketball games, has contributed a foreword praising the “love, commitment, and ownership” of the citizens of Krzyzewskiville.

-----------------------------------------------------

Seriously, the allegations and the stories around them are pretty shocking. Shocking, but not that suprising. Things are crazy here now. I'll post more later. I wanted to debut my new DukeWatch series format, but I got tired setting it up.

Two Days 'Til T-DAY

Saturday morning I will appear in Ann Arbor.
Saturday night I will bask in the glory of the BMP.
Sunday I will still be in Ann Arbor.
Monday I will have a dental appointment at the UM Dental School.
Tuesday evening I will head back to Washington DC.
Wednesday morning I will be at a hearing where Condoleeza Rice might be asked one of a list of questions that I wrote. (Possibly.)

I look forward to seeing everybody and telling you tales of the East. I saw Harry Reid, John Kerry, and Harry Reed yesterday at the unveiling of the Democrats' new "REAL SECURITY" national security policy. It was extremely vague, and a lot of the time they just talked about how the current leadership is incompetent. I guess that's true, though.

A short story without an ending

Grant has a solid interdisciplinary education under his belt. He worked hard in metalwork studies and history, and can see himself having a good career someday writing about metalwork and teaching it to undergrads.

Grant graduated and took a year off. Whenever anyone asked what his plans were, he said he was going to apply to graduate school for an MA or PhD in metalwork studies.

In addition to metalwork studies, Grant also took several years of smithing. He was a blacksmith with a lot of promise, he even won a couple contests. Grant started to feel that if he didn't pursue smithing, he would regret it forever. So he decided to apply to MFA's in metalwork, rather than MA's or PhD's. He sent out his aps and bided his time.

Then, something very exciting happened. A grill Grant smithed during his senior year gained the interest of several influential members of the blacksmith community. Grant was invited to visit Norway and meet those who had admired his work. But Grant didn't have the money for idle trips to Norway, so he told these people to wait. He'll come some day, just not right away.

And then, Grant was accepted to Northwestern's MFA in Smithing for the Stage and Screen. This is a completely new MFA, he would be a member of the very first class. The program is small, underfinanced, and the town of Evanston appears to suck.

If Grant goes to Northwestern, he will surely become a better smith and receive a lot of positive feedback from a strong peer group. Also, an MFA is a terminal degree, which would allow Grant to teach smithing at a university level - a good job, no doubt.

The MFA would be extremely expensive - it would most likely triple the student loans he already has to pay.

Grant also knows that in the world of professional metalwork, smithing is %99 CRAFT and %1 ART. True, two years of smithing in isolation would improve Grant's art, but he already has a good grasp of the craft. And, he already paid several thousand dollars to learn the craft as an undergrad.

If Grant turns down Northwestern, he will pursue smithwork professionally for a while. He will meet with all the people that have admired his grill, describe the new pieces he's been smithing, and quite possibly jumpstart a nice career in smithery.

There is no security, no guarantee of money or prestige, and Norway is totally lame.

Suggestions? Ideas? Grant has to make a decision by April 15. He has turned to his friends in his time of need.

Life is a Miracle

Life it's a candy
With a red hot chili pepper
Filling inside

Life ! Are you ready
You'll be a butterfly in
the ultimate fight

Life treats you gently like
Virgin Mary
But then strikes back
Like Chriss Eubank

Life
It is full of surprise
Crossroad to hell
or paradise

But little did I know
Mr. Preacher man
What real life could do
And shit could hit the fan
Life is beyond peace and war
Destiny and God
I remember that time

When life was a miracle
As if Zidane played
for Liverpool

Life is a business
Risky and confused
God gave you a deal
That you cannot refuse
Life is a Terrorism
Globalism Optimism
Give peace a chance
Give war romance

When life was a miracle
And pigs might fly that
was credible

But little did I know
Mr. Preacher man
What real life could do
And shit could hit the fan
Life is beyond peace and war
Justice and crime
Do you remember
that time

when life was a miracle...

France, Again

Behind the current political crisis seems nothing less than the essential question confronting Europe today: whether its safety net can survive in a more competitive world.

But France has not been seized by a desire to sacrifice. This is a protest that uses the revolutionary methods of the streets — which proved so potent in last fall's riots in the disadvantaged city suburbs — in defense of the status quo.

"I want students to gaze upward, to hope and dream for things that are more important," said Emmanuel Ethis, vice president of the university and a professor of sociology. "This is a rebellion — by the petite bourgeoisie."

Best spot on the web for information on the proposed nuclear cooperation deal between the United States and India!!!!!!

If anyone wants to check out what I've been spending a lot of my time on for the past week or two, check this out:
http://armscontrolcenter.org/nonproliferation/india/

Yeah, it's pretty awesome, and I pretty much put it all together. I will also be writing things about the India deal and putting them on the site. It will be pretty sweet, I think. I am also coming to Ann Arbor very soon, and will disclose details about that very soon. That should be pretty awesome too.

UM-Dearborn!

You might have gone to the "big house" but did you know about the "shit house"? I spent many depressed evenings in that little concave shadow you see at the entrance, working midnight shift. There was always someone to share a smoke with, and everybody knew your name.

Ann Arbor Film Festival

Hello all,

I'm hapy to announce a documentary I have edited and co-produced with Stashu Kybartas is premiering at the opening night of the 44th Annual Ann Arbor Film Festival. The title of the film is "Cousin Kasyte" [pronounced kah-zee-tey], a diaristic journey through post-communist Lithuania in a time of political, and personal, upheaval. The film was shot in the early 90's in Vilnius and the Lithuanian countryside and features a fantastic original score by Shaun Williams.

The screening will held on Tuesday, March 21st at 8pm at the historic Michigan Theater. More info: http://www.aafilmfest.org/schedule/

I also have a film that I edited for director Oren Goldenberg, titled "Finding the Third Circle" premiering on Saturday, 7pm at the AAFF. This experimental narrative combines original 16mm footage with historical footage to explore the impetus for collective resistance (also featuring an excellent score by Drafted By Minotaurs).

See you there!

Delusions of Grandeur

Mr. Wang, now 56, was confined to the psychiatric facility after he was detained in 1992 for unfurling a banner that criticized the Communist Party.

The authorities determined that he had "delusions of grandeur, litigation mania, and conspicuously enhanced pathological will," which Western human rights groups say are diagnoses officials have used to lock up troublesome dissidents who have not broken any laws.

After his release in 2005, Mr. Wang described widespread abuses in the mental asylum, known as the Beijing Ankang. He said he lived in cells with psychotically-disturbed inmates convicted of murder and was forced to swallow drugs to blunt his will. He also said that the facility use electrified acupuncture needles to punish patients while other inmates were made to watch.

The Other Love

"He held himself by his forearm against the doorjamb of the closet. It wasn’t the first time he had invented another woman."

From Ian Singleton, 'The Other Love'...

The Abrahamic Triad

Judaism - Christianity - Islam.

Judaism: God is One, absolutely ineffable. When written, the vowels must be removed. God is beyond writing, beyond speech. There is a radical gap separating God from Man. God is absolutely Other. And he has one name, which is ineffable.

Christianity: God IS Man, that is, God becomes the Word made Flesh. The radical gap separating God from Man is 'overcome' - God breaks out of eternity and into the realm of temporality. Here, God has three names: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Islam: a return to the rigorous monotheism of Judaism, albeit a universal monotheism (not attached to any particular ethnic group). Negation of the Trinity. God is neither beyond writing nor speech, for he is effability itself. He is every name and therefore none.

This is the Abrahamic Triad.

Sleep Over at Johnnies New APARTMENT!!!

Johnnies apartment (aka, the love nest of East Lansing) is now open for business! He's invited all of you to spend a romantic evening with him the night of Saturday 11th. If we get there in the afternoon on Saturday he's promised we can all go to Tasty Twist! It's right across the street from his apartment! There is also stuff to do walking around MSU and going to cool East Lansing Bars. Dax recommends we get there early to visit the Curious bookstore and eat at an Ethiopian restaurant, Alto's.

Drivers can park at my parents house, take as much food and cola as they want and walk (a short distance) to Johnnies or we could develop a shuttle system. After all the fun we can have a great dance/sleep party at Johnnies all night long!! (The sleeping will take most of the night)

East Coast Tour

The East Coast Tour is over. Here are some photos. First is Duke's neo-Gothic chapel where the Dukes are buried. Second is Paul the Duke, a candid shot. If you zoom on the third, you can see that it is Moby Dick's House of Kabob in Georgetown. The fourth is empty flagpoles. The fifth a federal building exemplary of DC. I went from Boston to Philadelphia, to Washington D.C., to Durham, to Myrtle Beach and Charleston. I saw Jim, Paul, and my grandparents from Canada who now live in the South. I was pretty ill the whole time. I joined the Library of Congress. I was drunk at Duke and pissed on Paul's department building. I sang Irish songs with my grandparents, such as "Who Put the Overalls in Mother Machree's Soup?" I asked Chris what he was giving up for Lent and he told me homework.

Jury Duties

This week, instead of sunning my ass in Cancun, I served on a jury for a criminal case in circuit court. The experience was very disturbing, probably because of the nature of the crime, which was (premeditated) assault with intent to kill. Some guys were shot point blank in the face, among other places (one victim is paralyzed). There was no physical evidence admitted into court, so everything was circumstantial. Plus the crime is 8 years old. And I had to decide if this guy did it.

I don’t like having that sort of power.

We ended up having a hung jury, which felt very shitty, because now the witnesses have to go through this all over again. One girl was so scared to testify, she was visibly shaking and couldn’t look at the defendant.

It was a generally depressing week, which included 20 hours of deliberation, 2 lunches out-on-the-town, and 3 lukewarm-to-cold “hot lunches” from the courthouse kitchen.

After the non-verdict was given, both lawyers asked us questions, to gauge whether the case is worth re-trying. They let us in on a few extra details that were not allowed in court, the most disturbing of which being that our defendant killed his brothers when he was a minor. And that he, another defendant, and the two nearly-murdered victims were all in Juvy together when they were young…each of the four guys had committed murder before the age of 18.

Nevertheless, despite a harrowing experience, I have changed my opinions about our country’s jury system. Though it is flawed, I think it’s a good idea. If you’re called in to “serve,” I would recommend the experience; I learned a lot about courts, more about humanity.

Communication Breakdown

Hey folks, I broke my cell phone and lost all my contact information, so I no longer know anybody's phone number other than my parents. So, if you would like me to be able to contact you, email me your 'digits' (tristandreisbach@gmail.com). Or else this is a very easy way to sever ties with me, if you'd like. I'll probably also send a mass email about this, because it is such a vital matter.
